Elves are medium height, frail, but flexible creatures with pointed ears. The elven race has been historically the least prolific of the inhabitants, owing perhaps in part to an indescribable sense of not belonging, as if their home should not be the stone caverns that surround them. Elves have proven the least capable, least well-adapted to life in the Pools. Physically weaker than the others, they make the weakest miners. Elves may get along fine with younger cubs of displacer beasts, but make poor herders, having an innate aversion to the aggressive beasts. Elves cannot swim as well as the tiefling or kragons. Elves cannot tolerate the heat of Flame so they cannot be smiths. Generally, elves spend their time fishing or mining. While they may be weaker than the other races at mining, they can do little else, freeing the others to do more important things.

Elves are drastically more likely to be members of the Cult of Flame, which views elves as the lowest creatures, created to serve all other races. This surprising result is due to the cultural identity of elves, which features a lack of self-worth. It is as if the only way for an elf to survive a life in the Pools is to believe that they are fulfilling their full potential – that their only purpose in life is to serve. And so most elves serve, quietly going about their business and not ruffling any feathers.

Occasionally there are exceptions, elves with ambition and desires. These eccentrics are either non-theist or Ashendent, believing that there is a better place, be it heaven or elsewhere, where elves can meet a brighter destiny. These elves usually lead an isolated, depressing life, rejected by other elves and longing to belong somewhere.

Unlike the other creatures of the Pools, elves do not sleep. Instead they trance, a procedure similar, yet different to sleeping.
